“We were hoping to get the 10-run rule to save some innings and save some arms,” Montgomery said. “When I saw (my third base coach) round me to go home, I thought to myself ‘I’m going to try to go all the way.’ He let me do it and I saw his throw and I was like ‘Oh, no.’ It was still fun and it was worth a shot.”
The Royals had four plays with two or more hits. Grand Forks Nos. 6 through 9 hitters supplied all eight RBI. Colin Hennessy went 3 for 4 and scored a team-high four runs. Brandon Walters went 1 for 3 with three RBI. Ben Carolin had a hit and two RBI.
Grand Forks left-handed starter Brock Roller picked up the win. He went six innings, allowed one unearned run, walked five and struck out four. Kaleb Binstock finished three scoreless innings to close out the game.
Kaden Steiner was tagged with the loss. He gave up 10 runs (seven earned) on 15 hits, walked three and struck out four in eight innings.
