UND is opening the regular season with a two-game series against Niagara in Ralph Engelstad Arena.
Herald three stars
First star: Ashton Calder, 2 goals, 1 assist.
Second star: Riese Gaber, 3 assists.
Third star: Jake Schmaltz, 1 goal, 1 assist.
UND 1, Niagara 0 -- Ethan Frisch (Matteo Costantini, Ashton Calder) 2:56. Calder makes a nice play to hold the puck in the zone and tap it to an open Costantini, who spots Frisch pinching in from the point. Costantini makes a perfect feed and Frisch scores the first goal of the season.
UND 2, Niagara 0 -- Jake Schmaltz (Riese Gaber, Brent Johnson) 7:36. Gaber flies up the left side with speed, torches Niagara defenseman Zac Herrmann and creates an odd-man situation. Schmaltz makes himself available for the pass, collects it and finishes the first of his college career.
UND 3, Niagara 0 -- Ashton Calder (Riese Gaber, Jake Sanderson) 17:06 (pp). Calder, who scored a WCHA-leading 16 goals last year but none on the power play, gets on the board on the power play immediately with UND. Gaber cuts through the Niagara defense and gets a shot off. Niagara goalie Chad Veltri makes the save, but Calder is there to bury the rebound.
UND 4, Niagara 0 -- Ashton Calder (Jackson Kunz, Cooper Moore) 3:57. Kunz, the former Grand Forks Red River player, gets a good look from the slot, but misses wide. Kunz tracks down the rebound behind the net and makes a beautiful feed to Calder, who buries No. 2 of the game.
UND 5, Niagara 0 -- Jake Sanderson (Judd Caulfield) 17:06. Sanderson gets on the board for the first time this season, taking a pass from Caulfield, skating through the left circle and snapping a shot short side from a bad angle on Veltri.
UND 6, Niagara 0 -- Tyler Kleven (Riese Gaber, Jake Schmaltz) 5:08. UND generates a great scoring chance on a beautiful passing play from Schmaltz to Judd Caulfield to Gaber. Veltri denies that one, but Schmaltz gets the puck and gives it to Kleven, who winds up and hammers a one-timer through traffic and past Veltri for his first of the season.
UND 6, Niagara 1 -- Shane Ott (Mike Faulkner, Jon Hill) 11:37 (dp). Kleven takes an elbowing penalty, but before UND can touch up, Niagara gets on the board. Hill sends a pass to Faulkner, who is alone in the slot. Faulkner drills it off the post and Ott finishes off the rebound.
UND 6, Niagara 2 -- Ryan Naumovski (Albin Nilsson, Luke Edgerton) 12:28 (pp). The Purple Eagles tack on a second goal when Naumovski attempts a cross-ice pass that hits Frisch in the skate and gets behind UND goalie Zach Driscoll.
