Tale of the tape

UND

Record: 16-15-2

Ranking: 19

Offense: 2.55 (43rd)

Defense: 2.39 (15th)

Power play: 15.0 (50th)

Penalty kill: 79.8 (37th)

Goaltending: .898 (43rd)

Omaha

Record: 9-20-3

Ranking: NR

Offense: 2.59 (39th)

Defense: 3.72 (58th)

Power play: 23.9 (8th)

Penalty kill: 78.6 (44th)

Goaltending: .891 (51st)

The focus: Zach Jordan

One player UND will have to carefully defend this weekend is Omaha junior forward Zach Jordan, who may have the hardest wrist shot in the NCHC. If Jordan is allowed to get off clean wrist shots, he has the ability to beat a goalie from beyond the circles. Because goaltenders often have a tough time controlling rebounds of his wrist shots, he can create offense that way, too. The 6-foot-3, 209-pound forward has seven points in his last six games against UND.

The pick: win and tie

UND currently leads the NCHC in penalty minutes per game (14.4). Taking too many penalties could be disastrous this weekend as Omaha boasts the NCHC’s best power play (23.9 percent). If the Fighting Hawks can stay out of the box and limit Omaha’s transition game, it could have a shot at a sweep. But if not, the Mavericks will more than likely take enough points to guarantee UND plays on the road next weekend.

3-3 tie, 4-2 UND

Former player spotlight: Trevor Olson

Former UND forward Trevor Olson is the player of the week in the ECHL. Olson had two goals and six points in three games for the Orlando Solar Bears, a minor league affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Olson has 14 goals and 28 points in 45 games for the Solar Bears.

NCHC notes

Western Michigan at Miami

* Senior Trevor Gorsuch will make his 25th consecutive start in goal tonight for Western Michigan, according to head coach Andy Murray. Gorsuch had a great stretch during the middle of the season, where he was 12-3-1 with a .934 save percentage and a 1.91 goals-against average. But he’s been pulled in four of his last seven starts, and has a 2-5 record with a 6.02 GAA and a .815 SP during that stretch.

* UND will be hoping Miami sweeps Western Michigan so the Fighting Hawks have a shot at home ice. But it may be a longshot. The RedHawks haven't swept any NCHC team in two-and-a-half years.

Minnesota Duluth at St. Cloud State

* On senior weekend for Grand Forks Red River standouts Jacob Benson and Jon Lizotte, St. Cloud State is bidding to complete the regular season undefeated at home. The Huskies enter this weekend’s series against Minnesota Duluth with a 13-0-1 mark in the National Hockey Center. The lone tie came against Colorado College. Going back to last season, the Huskies are 29-3-3 at home.

* St. Cloud State forward Kevin Fitzgerald is expected to be back in the lineup for the first time since early January, when he went down with an injury against Minnesota Duluth.

* Minnesota Duluth swept Miami last weekend in what could be a preview of a familiar first-round series. Minnesota Duluth has played the RedHawks in the first round in two of the last three seasons, sweeping them both times. Overall, Minnesota Duluth is 12-1-1 against Miami in AmsOil Arena. The Bulldogs will find out Saturday whether their first-round opponent is Colorado College, Miami or Omaha.

Denver vs. Colorado College

* Denver needs just a win or a tie in this weekend’s rivalry series against Colorado College to retain the Gold Pan for a record fifth-straight season. The Tigers won the Gold Pan for four-straight years from 1999-03. The Pioneers earned a win and a tie in the previous two games this season against the Tigers.

* This will mark the second and third matchups between the Rocky Mountain rivals in the last 12 days -- and there's a chance they could meet in the first round of the playoffs next weekend..

Omaha at North Dakota

* Omaha senior Mason Morelli of Minot will make his final trip back to North Dakota this weekend. Morelli’s grandfather, Reg, and father, Matt, both played at UND. Reg scored the game-winning goal of the 1959 national championship game in overtime, delivering the program its first title. Morelli was hurt last season when Omaha traveled to Grand Forks, so this is his first trip to play in his home state in two seasons.
