The quick rundown: Western Michigan 4, UND 2
Western Michigan 4, UND 2
The story: Western Michigan beat UND 4-2 to gain a series split, but the biggest story for UND is that standout rookie goalie Adam Scheel left the game late in the third period after an apparent knee injury. UND's Rhett Gardner and WMU's Jade McMullen were tangled up on a shorthanded rush and goal by Hugh McGing and crashed into the rookie. He had to be helped off by athletic trainer Mark Poolman and team doctor Greg Greek. With UND's other goalie Peter Thome already being hurt, senior walk-on Ryan Anderson entered the game for the first time. Freshman defenseman Michael Joyaux scored the first two goals of his career on the power play in the second period to stake the Broncos to a lead. Those power-play goals ended UND's run of 18 consecutive penalty kills. The Broncos built a 3-0 on a Josh Passolt goal before UND rallied in the third. Gavin Hain and Jordan Kawaguchi scored back-to-back goals in the span of 1:59 to pull UND within one. McGing's shorthanded goal ended it.
Three stars: 1. Michael Joyaux, WMU, 2 goals; 2. Gavin Hain, UND, goal; 3. Josh Passolt, WMU, goal.
Did you notice? Early in the third period, a Western Michigan defender put the puck through the scoreboard on the penalty kill. His clearing attempt went up and over the top of the scoreboard and fell down through the middle of it. UND got an offensive zone faceoff out of it.
Lineup notes: UND junior forward Dixon Bowen re-entered the lineup after sitting out Friday's game serving an NCAA-mandated one-game suspension for have three game misconduct penalties. Bowen played on the fourth line with Ludvig Hoff and Zach Yon. Casey Johnson was moved out of the lineup to make room for Bowen. UND played without forward Grant Mismash (knee), goalie Peter Thome (hand) and forward Joel Janatuinen (undisclosed). Defenseman Josh Rieger made the trip and was a healthy scratch. Western Michigan made just one change, inserting rookie Cole Gallant in place of Drew Worrad.
Updated records: UND 14-13-2 (8-9-1 NCHC), Western Michigan 17-10-1 (10-7-1).
