LAS VEGAS -- A group of former UND hockey players cannot make it to Las Vegas for tonight’s UND-Minnesota game.
But they wanted to find a way to add to the event for UND fans who made the trip.
So, T.J. Oshie and a handful of his former teammates and friends -- including Brad Miller, Evan Trupp, Ryan Duncan, Corban Knight, Brad Malone and Joe Gleason -- contacted officials at Orleans Arena and purchased hundreds of beers that will be passed out for free to fans attending the pregame party outside of the arena.
The party will begin at 2 p.m. local Vegas time, and the roughly 300 free beers are expected to be distributed around then.
The group passed along a short message for the fans: “Seeing the support for UND hockey coming from 44 states and around the world, we wanted to do something small for the fans that made our days playing for the Sioux so memorable since we couldn’t be there in person. Our only regret is that we couldn't send more. Have fun. Cheer loud. Stay safe. Be respectful. GO SIOUX!”
More than 100 former players are expected to attend tonight’s game, but the group of players who purchased the beer will not.
Oshie is currently playing for the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals. They have a game against Calgary today.
Knight is playing for the Philadelphia Flyers, who are playing the New York Islanders today.
Malone plays for the Bakersfield Condors in the American Hockey League. Both Miller and Trupp are playing professionally in Germany and Gleason coaches hockey in the Twin Cities.
The pregame party is schedule to last from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. local Vegas time just outside of Orleans Arena. The game is scheduled to start at 7:07 p.m. Pacific time/9:07 p.m. Central time.
