Midco to broadcast UND-Minnesota game in Vegas, other road games

UND’s game in October against rival Minnesota in Las Vegas is among the most coveted tickets in program history.

The game sold out instantly and tickets on the secondary market are generally going between $500 and $600 per seat. The cheapest ticket currently on StubHub is $380, and that’s for a single.

That will keep many fans from attending, but they’ll still be able to watch the game.

Midco Sports Network is sending a crew to Las Vegas to broadcast the rivalry game, which is scheduled for 9 p.m. Central on Oct. 27.

Because it’s UND’s home game, Midco has exclusive rights.

“Aside from personally being excited to be able to call the game, it’s a great thing for our network,” play-by-play announcer Alex Heinert said. “We’re going to be able to take a crew on the road and broadcast a really special event -- it’s the best rivalry in college hockey -- and bring the game back to people in this area.”

Heinert said ever since this game popped on the schedule, Midco has been working toward broadcasting it.

The UND-Minnesota games in Ralph Engelstad Arena last year were both top five in viewership among all of Midco’s broadcasts last season.

“We’d expect this game to be our most-watched game of this upcoming season,” Heinert said. “It’s going to be a tremendous event.”

The Vegas game, which will be played in the 7,500-seat Orleans Arena, will be the only meeting between the historic rivals next season.

UND has started playing destination games every two or three years.

UND played against Clarkson in Winnipeg’s Bell MTS Place in 2012, and it played two exhibition games in Vancouver in 2014. Neither of those events were televised, though.

UND’s destination game against Boston College in New York City’s Madison Square Garden in 2016 was carried by CBS Sports Network.

After Vegas, UND’s next destination game is expected to be in Nashville in 2020. The tentative opponent is Penn State. That game hasn’t been finalized or officially announced yet.

In addition to the Vegas game, Midco Sports Network will carry four UND hockey road games this season.

Although Midco doesn’t have first rights to road games, executives have been trying to find ways to carry more of them.

Midco will send a team to Omaha to do UND’s road series in Baxter Arena on Jan. 18-19. It’s possible that the broadcast will feature one announcer from each city, but the production will be handled by Midco.

Midco also will carry Minnesota Duluth’s local broadcast of the series in AmsOil Arena on Nov. 30-Dec. 1. Those games will be called and produced by Duluth’s local team and carried on Midco.

In exchange, Duluth’s local TV station, My9, will carry Midco’s broadcast of the UND-Minnesota Duluth series in Ralph Engelstad Arena on Feb. 22-23.
