Here's a look at some of the findings from the most recent Red River creel survey, conducted May 1-Sept. 30, 2001 by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources:
- Estimated angler pressure for the Red River during the survey period was 108,182 angler-hours.
- The creel clerks interviewed 1,026 angler parties during the survey -- 800 interviews from Red River anglers, 134 from Red Lake River anglers and 92 from Ottertail River anglers.
- The estimated angling pressure for the Red River during the period was 108,182 hours, down 43 percent from 1994. Creel organizers speculate high water conditions and unfavorable weather might have kept anglers away from the river in 2001.
- Red River anglers kept an estimated 42,981 pounds of channel catfish, up from 28,384 pounds during a Minnesota survey in 1994 and 23,935 pounds reported in a 7½-month North Dakota survey in 2000.
