A lot of Grand Forks Red River players had a hand in Friday’s 7-1 Rider victory over West Fargo Sheyenne at Eagles Arena.

The Roughriders cruised through a bruising first period with three goals from seniors Justin Wasvick, Brendan Mullen and Landon Langenstein.

The win lifted Red River to a 7-1 record.

The Roughriders racked up two more goals in the second period from Morgan Hoefs and Carter Sproule to go up 5-0. Red River bombarded Sheyenne goalie Peyton Buchholz with 15 shots on goal in the second period and 40 overall.

In contrast, the Mustangs totaled 14 shots on Roughrider netminder Andrew Peterson with only six quality scoring chances.

Red River kept the Mustangs scoreless until 6:45 in the second when Sheyenne’s Carson Teckenburg lit the lamp on a 5-4 advantage.

The Roughriders kept up their tempo as the final two goals came from defensemen Wyatt LeDuc and Jake Grandstrand.

Red River will host the East Grand Forks Senior High Green Wave next Friday.

East Grand Forks has yet to play as Minnesota prep sports is still on hold due to the pandemic. Teams are practicing and will be allowed to play games on Jan. 14.
