MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota Gophers hockey radio analyst Glen Sonmor has decided to retire at the end of the season.

The university made the announcement today.

Sonmor has been in the broadcast booth for the last 15 years, working with play-by-play man Wally Shaver since 2001.

The 81-year-old Sonmor succeeded John Mariucci as head coach in 1966 and guided the Gophers to an NCAA runner-up finish in 1971 before moving on to the pros.

Sonmor was head coach of the now-defunct World Hockey Association's Minnesota Fighting Saints, based in St. Paul, before coaching the NHL's Minnesota North Stars - now the Dallas Stars - from 1979 to 1983 and leading them to their first Stanley Cup finals in 1981.
