Grand Forks Red River eighth-grader Sophie Brakke started the East Region girls golf meet with a shotgun start on No. 7 at the Grand Forks Country Club.

After a tee shot left her 50 yards out from the pin, Brakke sunk an eagle.

It was a good omen for an important scorer for the Roughriders on a cold, windy Monday.

Red River and Grand Forks Central finished in a tie for sixth place. With six teams advancing to the North Dakota Class A state meet, the tiebreaker criteria was matching up the two teams' fifth golfer.

For the Riders, that was Brakke with a 108, which was 22 shots better than Central's fifth golfer.

"It's fun when golf becomes a team game, and we always preach that part of it," Red River coach Eric Sanders said. "The kids buy into that stuff. You can quit when you're by yourself, but you can't when it's for your team."

The state meet is Oct. 6-7 at Souris Valley Golf Course in Minot.

As a team, Fargo Shanley won the East Region meet with 347 strokes -- three ahead of Fargo Davies, which was paced by medalist Ava Olson, who shot an 81.

Clara Hanson of Central and Greta McArthur of Shanley finished one shot back with an 82.

Red River was led by Jaya Grube, who tied for ninth with a 90. Aiding Grube were scorers Jadyn Arel (94), Brielle Larson (95) and Taylor Piepkorn (101).

Central, which lost a sixth-place region tiebreaker for the second year in a row, didn't qualify as a team but any individuals within 15 strokes of the medalist qualify for state, which means Clara Hanson, Sydney Hanson (91) and Madelyn Trapnell (94) will play at state.

"The teams three through seven have been playing leapfrog all year," Central coach Nathan Olson said. "We've taken every place three through seven, and I think Red River has, too. I was happy with our season. We were disappointed today, but the girls played hard on a day. We had a great weather season, but today it was hard."
