The Hockey Academy took off in its first year, in large part due to the strong reputation of leaders Brad Berry and Erik Fabian.

Although both have departed for assistant coaching jobs -- Berry with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Fabian with the UND women -- Ralph Engelstad Arena has hired another renowned hockey person to run the academy for its second year.

Former UND goaltender Karl Goehring, who helped the Sioux to a national championship in 2000, was named the new director Wednesday. He's starting the job immediately.

Goehring, who most recently served as a coach with the Syracuse Crunch in the American Hockey League, said he discussed the position with Berry a few weeks ago and liked the idea.

"I love the idea of an elite local hockey academy and kids coming from all over to grow their game and take it to the next level," Goehring said. "It's a really exciting opportunity for the area and myself. I want to keep it going in the right direction. I'm thrilled to get the opportunity to be involved in such a great program."

Goehring, a pro from 2001-09, has lived with his family in Grand Forks for a couple of years now.

Ralph Engelstad Arena general manager Jody Hodgson said Goehring is a logical fit.

"Karl has great passion for the game, exceptional people skills and a wealth of professional hockey experience, both as a player and as a coach," Hodgson said. "Karl enjoyed a long and successful career as a player, has professional coaching experience and both situations will serve him well in his new role."

The Hockey Academy will likely add one more full-time staff member.

"We're looking at that right now, trying to find the right fit," Goehring said, "someone with passion for the game and passion to make people better."
