Although Grand Forks Red River's surprising dethroning of Fargo Shanley at the Grand Forks Invitational was aided by the absence of three Deacons regulars, Roughriders coach Sue Ann Lund still had plenty to be happy about.
"For us to beat Davies for the first time this year was great," Lund said. "We had two golfers in the top five so we're very pleased with that."
Red River bested the field by 13 strokes en route to the team title Tuesday at King's Walk.
The Riders were led by a second-place finish from JoDee Wheeler (85) and a fourth-place finish from Ashley Knecht (87).
"We're playing a lot more consistent," Lund said. "Ashley at 87 is a great score."

It was the first time this season Knecht has broke 90.
Red River also had strong scores from its third and fourth golfers. Maggi Ferry shot a 96, while Alexis Caoili had a 97.
"Having four golfers score under 100 really helped," Lund said. "It allowed us to beat Davies and that was our goal today."
In the medalist race, Shanley's Sarah Storandt was dominant. She shot a 76, good for first place by nine strokes.
Storandt leads the East Region this season with a 76 average. No other golfer averages less than 80.
The Deacons, who had won each meet leading up to the GF Invitational, finished fourth with 392 strokes. Two Shanley players were on vacation, while another was out with an injury.
Davies came in second with 378 strokes, followed by Fargo North at 390. Grand Forks Central finished seventh with 416 shots.
Taylor Lund led the Knights with a sixth-place finish (91).
