Hot shooting from the outside and tough defense on the inside proved to be the keys in East Grand Forks Senior High’s 67-60 win against East Grand Forks Sacred Heart on Thursday night.
And Senior High also knocked its rival from the unbeaten ranks, as Sacred Heart dropped to 12-1.
Senior High’s Kelsey Schlenk was the Green Wave shooter that made the difference.
The senior drained four three-pointers and hit several free throws down the stretch en route to a 16-point night.

“Kelsey shot the ball well tonight; she really turned it around in the second half,” said Senior High coach Emily Ruemmele.
While Schlenk provided a spark from the outside, the Green Wave interior defense proved to be solid all night.
The Wave won the battle on the glass, outrebounding the Eagles 46-29. Ellen Potter led Senior High with 11 rebounds while Hannah Vonasek grabbed 10.
Senior High’s inside defensive play also helped slow down Sacred Heart’s Stacy Remer, who was held to eight points.
“We ran a 2-3 zone and tried to prevent her from driving to the middle,” said Ruemmele. “She’s a great player and is going to get her shots. We just tried to contain her.”
With a heavier focus on Remer, freshman guard Anya Edwards picked up the slack for the Eagles, finishing with a a game-high 19 points.
“Anya had a great game,” said Sacred Heart coach Joann Remer.
Also stepping up for the Eagles was sophomore forward Michele Remer who scored 16 points, which included a layup off a no-look pass from her sister at the 8:53 mark in the second half. That narrowed the Senior High lead to two points.

But Senior High managed to hang on.
Even though Michele Remer and Edwards had good shooting nights, Coach Remer says their lack of outside shooting played a big role in the loss.
“They forced us to shoot outside,” said the Sacred Heart coach. “They gave us shots from the outside; we just couldn’t hit them.”
Senior High, which also received 10 points each from Potter and Vonasek, improved to 8-9.
“It’s always fun playing Sacred Heart; it was a great effort on both ends by both teams,” said Ruemmele.
