Heavy morning storms Friday weren't enough to wipe out the Montgomery Memorial American Legion baseball tournament on the artificial turf of Kraft Field.

The tournament went as planned on the scoreboard, as well, with the favorites advancing on the first day.

The Grand Forks Blues, Grafton and Park River each won by the 10-run rule in first-round action.

The Blues, Grand Forks' junior legion team, beat Midway-Minto 11-1, Grafton beat the Minot Metros 19-5, and Park River beat Bemidji 10-0.

Canadian opponents St. James and Bonivital played the final first-round game late Friday night, with the winner advancing to face the host Blues at 5 p.m. today. Grafton and Park River will follow in Saturday's second semifinal about 7:30 p.m.

The Blues advanced behind the offense of Dane Montgomery and Jaxon Kriewald, who each had a pair of hits. Montgomery scored three times, while Kriewald drove in three. Evan Szepanski picked up the pitching win.

Grafton, which batted around the lineup in both the third and fourth innings, was powered by a nine-run fourth inning. The top four hitters in the Grafton order went a combined 10-for-14, led by leadoff hitter Zak Hernandez, who was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four runs scored.

Park River moved to the semifinals behind the shutout performance by pitcher Esten Beneda. Jacob Erovick, Will Zimmerman and Nick Lindgren each added a pair of hits for the offense, which scored seven times in the fourth inning.
