Grand Forks head coach Alex Hedlund: “We found a way to fight through adversity without a full line up due to sickness, but bottom line is we have to put ourselves in positions to win hockey games. A full 51 minutes will be needed to win games in March, that has to be our mindset now. I was proud of the answer back to force overtime with 45 seconds left in the game. Mya Mannausau had a good night for us scoring in regulation and in the shootout. I was also happy with some of our players that don’t see the ice quite as much, stepping up and giving us some good minutes. Short memory, and an all-in mindset is needed for tomorrow against Mandan.”

Grand Forks head coach Brent Newman: “Jamestown is a team that we don’t get to see that often and we were very fortunate this season to have the opportunity to compete against them in a dual situation. We were very grateful that the weather cooperated enough that they were also able to travel and still compete against us. Our guys were anxious to get another night of competition under their belt and they continue to prove to themselves that they can swim well and compete while in the midst of hard training. We can certainly tell it is catching up to them, but to their credit they are working through it, as they should, and giving everything their best effort. They are coming together as a team while working towards their individual goals. We have a good solid week of straight training ahead of us for the guys to now start incorporating improved technique and strategy to their continually improving efforts. We have a lot of work ahead of us.
Michael Schill is still a young guy (eighth grade) but is so motivated and focused on getting better and improving his swimming ability that he is very mature for his age and quickly becoming a role model on the team. He comes to practice and puts in his time working through exhaustion and frustration and generally doesn’t let it overcome his emotion. Tonight was a huge payoff for him and his effort. His first career state qualifying time happened today (500 freestyle) and we couldn’t be happier for him. It’s a testament to his drive and determination and he just keeps working at making himself, and the people around him, better.
Avery Berg continues to chip away at his personal best times with his hard driving, “do your job” attitude that he brings to practice and competition. Tonight, he had two first place individual finishes in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke (career PR). Avery is very even-keeled which really benefits him in this sport because he never really gets too high or too low and generally doesn’t let an emotional roller coaster affect his performance. Tonight, was just another example of him putting his best effort forward and, again, surprising himself with great swims that in-the-moment did not feel like his best. He’s that athlete that is constantly concerned he’s not doing enough even though he’s one of the hardest working guys on the team.”
