Former UND running back and current Winnipeg Blue Bomber Brady Oliveira rescued a woman and her dog from the Red River on Tuesday, according to a Winnipeg news station.

Oliveira, a Winnipeg native, told CTV News that he had been walking his puppy in the Maple Grove Dog Park in St. Vital when he noticed a woman near the river running after her dog.

"Next thing you know her dog actually fell into the river, and then she slipped into the river and held onto some sort of little tree branch," Oliveira told CTV News.

Oliveira said they were able to scramble back up the riverbank to safety.

Oliveira, who received all-Big Sky Conference recognition in 2016 and 2017, finished his UND career as the program's seventh all-time leading rusher with 2,822 yards (5.6 yards per carry).

Overall, Oliveira played in 42 games for the Fighting Hawks, recording 2,822 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns over four seasons.

The Blue Bombers selected Oliveira as the first running back taken in the 2019 CFL Draft, with the No. 14 pick in the second round.

Oliveira missed most of the 2019 CFL season with a severe leg injury suffered in the team's home opener.

As of early April, the CFL announced the season would not begin until at least early July due to the coronavirus pandemic.
