At least one recruit ranking system says the UND football program just landed a verbal commitment from the top running back in Minnesota.

Gaven Ziebarth of Cambridge-Isanti, the No. 1-rated running back in Minnesota according to, announced his commitment on Monday to play for the Fighting Hawks.

Ziebarth, a 6-foot, 205-pound four-sport athlete, also held offers from Army and Air Force. Along with football, Ziebarth plays hockey, track and field and baseball.

"I liked the family aspect of it," Ziebarth said. "I wanted to be around coaches and teammates that feel like family. I wanted to be comfortable around the players and coaches. I went there for a junior day before all this started. The campus was really nice. It felt like home ever since."

Ziebarth was an all-state track selection and finished eighth in the 100 meters as a sophomore at the state meet, recording a top time of 10.88 seconds in the 100 meters.

In 2019, Cambridge-Isanti, which plays in Class 5A, finished 1-8. Ziebarth, though, had 135 carries for 937 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also had five catches for 92 yards and a touchdown.

Cambridge is 45 miles north of Minneapolis.

Ziebarth is a mix of a power and speed running back, he said.

"I'm a lot bigger than some of the backs, but my speed separates me from the others," Ziebarth said.

Ziebarth is the third 2021 commitment for the UND football program, which received a verbal last week from Moorhead quarterback Trey Feeney.

According to, Ziebarth is the No. 15 overall prospect in the state of Minnesota. Feeney is listed as the No. 18 overall prospect in the state and is the first quarterback ranked.
