EAGAN, Minn. — Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen is opening a new health club, and this one is coming to Rochester.
Thielen, a native of Detroit Lakes, owns several ETS Performance health clubs in the Twin Cities and is now expanding the brand to Rochester.
"It's a done deal," Thielen said during Vikings training camp. "They're still building the facility, hoping (to open) in September."
The club is nearing completion and will be located at 5931 Bandel Road NW. Rochester's Marcus Sherels, a former Vikings player who is in his first season with the New Orleans Saints, is also a part-owner of the new gym.
"Marcus is part of it," Thielen said. "We're really excited about it. It's a place that we've been wanting to get into for a long time because we know athletics means a lot to that community and there's a lot of youth that we feel we can take their games to the next level."
The club will offer a wide range of fitness activities for adults and youth. Regarding the younger people using the facility, Thielen said the goal is "not only just sports, but also just helping them become good people."
Thielen said there will be a grand opening at the club in the near future and he hopes to attend, even if it is during the Vikings' season.
"I'm not exactly sure (when)," Thielen said. "If it works out during the season, that would be ideal. We'll just have to see how that plays out."
Thielen has gone as an undrafted wide receiver out of Minnesota State, Mankato to become one of the elite receivers in the NFL.
He set an NFL record last year by totaling more than 100 yards receiving in the first eight games to start the season. The Pro Bowl receiver finished 2018 with 113 catches for 1,373 yards (12.2 per catch) and nine touchdowns.
"I don't know exactly how many times I'll be down there, but I'll definitely be checking it out," Thielen said of the Rochester club. "Obviously I'm a huge part of ETS and have a lot of belief and backing behind it. I'm excited about bringing it to southern Minnesota."
