Here is the weekly report from Department of Natural Resources conservation officers in northwestern Minnesota for Sept. 14:

District 1 - Baudette area

CO Ben Huener (Roseau) monitored bear, elk and goose hunting activity. A complaint of an over limit of fish was investigated in Warroad. Other enforcement action included operating an ATV in a Wildlife Management Area.

CO Larry Milbridge (Warroad) checked goose hunters, anglers and ATVs. A DNR survey crew was assisted with depth readings near Warroad for a new public access that's being planned.

CO Jeff Birchem (Baudette) reports that goose numbers remain good as geese are coming and going into the area. Hunters have had to deal with very few harvested fields and wet conditions. Bear hunters continue to have good success. CO Birchem gave a firearm safety presentation to a local youth day promoting hunting. Early goose hunters were checked, as were anglers on Lake of the Woods.

CO Jeremy Woinarowicz (Thief River Falls) answered calls concerning an injured eagle and a sick moose. A Wetland Conservation Act violation was investigated, as was a complaint of illegal use of ATVs by bear hunters. Woinarowicz operated an area airboat performing a waterfowl survey on Thief Lake and monitored area waterfowl hunters. Enforcement action for the week included fail to register bear, unregistered bear baits, unregistered ATV, unplugged shotgun, and fail to sign federal waterfowl stamp.

CO Angie Warren (Thief River Falls) followed up on possible gray wolf depredations. Bear hunting activity was worked along with ATV activity. Area WMAs were patrolled. Area angling and boating activity was monitored and a call of an injured bald eagle was handled. CO Warren worked areas for possible shining activity.

CO Keith Backer (Blackduck) checked early season goose hunters and monitored area ATV activity. Fall fishing in the area is still good with a number of over limit complaints being investigated. Enforcement activity for the week included bear baiting violations.

CO Brice Vollbrecht (Blackduck) checked boating and angling activity on Red Lake and the Tamarac River. Anglers are starting to report some success. Time was spent monitoring bear hunting activity and maintenance was performed on station equipment. ATV complaints were worked in the Kelliher and Waskish areas. Violations included boating violations.

CO Robert Gorecki (Baudette) monitored fishing and hunting activity throughout the week. Anglers on Lake of the Woods are finding good success down rigging in deeper water. CO Gorecki worked with CO Woinarowicz during the busy Labor Day Weekend, which resulted in the finding of several over limits of walleye. Early Goose hunting continues to be good with many hunters getting limits of geese. A radio interview was done that discussed new laws and regulations, and follow-up was done on an invasive species case. Enforcement action taken this week included fishing and hunting violations.

District 2 - Bemidji area

CO Stuart Bensen (Erskine) reports bear and Canada goose hunters are having pretty good success. A number of calls were received from hunters looking for copies of their Firearm Safety Certificate or for looking for a Firearm Safety Class so they can hunt out of state. Calls regarding mountain lion track sightings continue. So far, all the tracks appear to be left by canines.

CO Dan Malinowski (Fosston) checked bear hunters, goose hunters, boaters, anglers, and ATVs. Wetland alteration sites were inspected. The first shining complaints of the fall season were received.

CO Tim Gray (Bagley) investigated trespass and ATV complaints. Bear and goose hunters were checked.

CO Mike Hruza (Bemidji) checked goose hunters, bear hunters, anglers, and ATVs. Goose hunter success has slowed, while angling success continues to improve. He attended a meeting in Grand Rapids.

CO Stacey Sharp (Bemidji), with assistance from CO Greg Salo, investigated a TIP call about an illegally taken bear. The hunters quickly broke camp and headed but to the Metro Area where CO Salo located the hunters. Enforcement action was taken. Anglers, boaters, bear hunters, goose hunters, and ATVs were checked.

CO Phil Seefeldt (Moorhead) reports a slow week for Canada goose hunters. The geese are not decoying well. Some violations were detected involving license/stamp issues and unplugged firearms. ATV activity is increasing. Riders are encouraged to review riding laws, especially those involving juvenile operation and operating on roads and ditches. Violations involving aquatic plant removal and failure to follow APM permit conditions were investigated and enforcement action taken.

CO Joe Stattelman (Detroit Lakes) checked anglers, boaters, bear hunters, goose hunters, and ATVs. Trespass complaints were investigated, and the Becker County SO was assisted with ATV issues. The officer assisted with Use of Force training to other conservation officers. Violations involving aquatic plant removal and failure to follow APM permit conditions were investigated and enforcement action taken.

CO Al Peterson (Osage) met with a county attorney regarding a pending case. Complaints of littering, theft, and a bobcat that was shot were investigated.

CO Gary Forsberg (Pelican Rapids) checked anglers, boaters, and goose hunters. A ginseng certificate was completed. Complaints of poisoned animals and a dead eagle were investigated. The eagle turned out to be a cormorant.
