TERRACE, Minn. -- Tests are planned on the body of a young male cougar found in western Minnesota.

The Department of Natural Resources picked up the animal's body today from a property near Terrace in Pope County.

The DNR says based on hair loss and body decomposition, the cougar apparently had been dead for about a week before it was found.

KSAX-TV reports the DNR plans to send the animal's body to Grand Rapids for a test to help determine the time and cause of death.

DNR spokesman Dan Stark says two cougar sightings caught on trail cameras were confirmed earlier this year in western Minnesota, near Park Rapids and Ortonville.

Stark says it's unknown if the dead cougar was captive or wild. He says the animal weighed about 100 pounds.
