COLLEGE HOCKEY: Boyd, Gophers cruise to win over Badgers

Minnesota stormed out to an early 5-0 lead as the Gophers cruised to a 5-2 win over Big Ten foe Wisconsin at Mariucci Arena on Saturday as part of Hockey Day in Minnesota.

Travis Boyd led the Gophers with two goals. Minnesota also received goals from Sam Warning, Connor Reilly, and Christian Isackson.

Wisconsin forward Grant Besse scored both of the Badgers goals, one coming late in the second and the other late in the final period.

Minnesota outshot the Badgers 50-26.

The Gophers improved to 11-7-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin dropped to 2-13-3 overall and 0-3-1 in conference play.

  • Western Michigan 4, Minnesota Duluth 2: Colton Hargrove scored two goals to lead Western Michigan to a National Collegiate Hockey Conference road win over Minnesota Duluth.

Both of Hargrove’s goals came in the final period, the tying one at 10:38 and game-winner with 30 seconds remaining.
Nolan LaPorte and Taylor Fleming also scored goals for the Broncos. Alex Iafallo and Tony Cameranesi provided the goals for Duluth.

  • Omaha 4, Colorado College 1: Omaha scored four unanswered goals as the Mavericks defeated Colorado College in Colorado Springs.

Avery Peterson scored a pair of goals in the second period to lead the way for Omaha. Tanner Lane and Austin Ortega capped off the scoring for the Mavericks with goals in the final period.
Scott Wamsganz scored the lone goal for the Tigers midway through the first period.

  • Denver 4, St. Cloud State 1: Four different players scored goals as Denver defeated St. Cloud State in Denver.

After a scoreless first period, Nolan Zajac scored midway through the second period to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Huskies’ forward Nick Oliver then tied the game up early in the third period.
The tied score did not last long as Denver received goals from Danton Heinen, Joey LaLeggia, and Trevor Moore to give the Pioneers a three-goal lead, which would remain so until the final horn.

  • Lake Superior State 4, Bemidji State 2: Luke Sandler scored two goals to lead Lake Superior State to a Western Collegiate Hockey Association home win and series sweep over Bemidji State.

Sandler and Stephen Perfetto each scored goals in the first period to give the Lakers an early 2-0 lead. Lake Superior State was able to increase that lead to 4-0 with goals from Alex Globke in the second period and Sandler again early in the third.
Markus Gerbrandt and Cory Ward provided the offense for the Beavers.
