College football: St. Paul's Henderson headed to Miami

MIAMI -- As expected, coveted offensive line recruit Seantrel Henderson has decided to enroll at the University of Miami, his father told The Miami Herald on Friday.

Henderson sought and received his release from the University of Southern California this week. He decided against attending USC after the Trojans were placed on probation.

"Miami was always Seantrel's second choice, and this was next-best fit for him," said Sean Henderson, Seantrel's father. "He loves coach (Randy) Shannon. Jeff Stoutland is a great line coach. Their situation is on the rise. It's a private institution, small class sizes, same thing we like about USC. It's a good fit for us."

Sean Henderson said he called Stoutland on Thursday and was told that UM was still interested in offering his son a scholarship. Henderson accepted.

Henderson said his son is eligible to play this season and has been cleared academically. But Henderson still must go through the admissions process.

Seantrel Henderson on Friday changed his Facebook profile picture to a Miami logo. "It's all about The U," Henderson wrote.

Rivals.com ranked Henderson the No. 2 overall prospect in the nation, and the top offensive lineman.

Henderson, a 330-pounder from Cretin-Derham Hall High in St. Paul, is expected to compete for immediate playing time at offensive tackle.

"I believe he will play this season," his father said. "All we ask is for a fair shot."
