BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Mayville State won its opener but fell to the top-ranked team in the Bellevue bracket of the NAIA national baseball tournament Tuesday.
Top-ranked Tabor (Kan.) College blanked Mayville 8-0 after the Comets downed Madonna of Michigan 6-2 in the first game of the double-elimination tournament.
Mayville, 40-21, will face either Madonna of William Wood of Missouri Wednesday night in a loser-out game.
Tabor scored two runs in the first inning to gain control. Alex Couch led Tabor (50-9) with three hits and four RBI.
Mayville managed only five hits off Tabor’s Russell Longworth. Spencer Mallonee, John Pistulka, Nate Williams, Christian Berry and Darin Stanislawski each had a hit for the Comets.

The winner of the tournament advances to the NAIA World Series later this month in Lewiston, Idaho.
Mayville State 6, Madonna 1
Zach Mihic, John Cahill and Mason Swegarden all had two hits to lead Mayville past Madonna in the opening game of the regional.
Tyler Leibert picked up the win, striking out 11 batters in nine innings and allowing five hits.
The Comets scored two runs in the fourth on RBI singles from Stanislawski and Swegarden.
In the fifth, Mayville added two more on a two-run homer from Aaron Miller.
