Class B track: Elaina Swartz, Gracie Wright are double winners on Day 2

BISMARCK--Park River/Fordville-Lankin's Elaina Swartz ran and jumped her way to a pair of state track titles and helped PR-F- L to a tie for fourth place in the North Dakota Class B State Track and Field Meet on Saturday.

BISMARCK-Park River/Fordville-Lankin's Elaina Swartz ran and jumped her way to a pair of state track titles and helped PR-F- L to a tie for fourth place in the North Dakota Class B State Track and Field Meet on Saturday.

Swartz began her day with a :45.02 in the 300 hurdles and later added a 100 hurdle title in 16.10.

Hillsboro-Central Valley's Gracie Wright also was a double winner, capturing the 400 and 800 meters.

Hazen won the team title with 78 points. Hillsboro-Central Valley was second with 62 and Carrington third with 47. Park River-Fordville- Lankin and Harvey-Wells County tied for fourth with 40 points.

Swartz learned a lesson running in Friday's preliminaries.

"I know the wind on this last stretch is hard. It was yesterday," Swartz said. "I knew my start had to be good so I could finish strong. I was happy with my start."

Swartz ran a 45.52 into a gale in Friday's prelims.

"I'm a pretty strong runner but I would say this state meet is the hardest wind I've had to run against this year," Swartz said.

After winning the 100 hurdles, Swartz was unable to say which race was most pleasing.

"I don't think I can pick which one," she said. "I did PR in the 100 hurdles and I was running into the wind the whole way."

That includes the key stretch of the race - between the last hurdle and the finish line.

"I come off that last hurdle, that's when I know I need to finish," Swartz said. "The whole season I haven't had anybody push me. It's different feeling another person next to me."

That was Taylor Roehl of Grant County-Flasher, who was second in 46.53.

Swartz was unbeaten in the 100 hurdles this season.

Wright, meanwhile, posted a 57.03 in the 400 and a 2:17.12 in the 800.

For the second straight day, May-Port-C-G's Caillee Peterson went out and had some fun on the track. She posted an 11:14.50 in winning the 3,200.

"I definitely ran my race," Peterson said. "In other races I try to stick with people or I try to see if I can keep up with people.

"Today, I took the lead and made it mine."

Peterson said state is unpredictable due to the caliber of runners.

"It's hard to have a planned strategy. You have to go in there and adapt," Peterson said.

Down the stretch, Peterson had time to watch herself on a TV.

"At state on the finishing stretch you can see that board and you can see who's behind you. I didn't watch myself finish," Peterson said.

Harvey-Wells County's Kari Wolfe set a state tournament record with a javelin throw of 144 feet, 2 inches.

On the boys side, New Town won with 85. Hillsboro-Central Valley finished fifth with 43.

Hillsboro-CV was led by Shandon Toenies, who won the 200 in :22.53, finished second in the 100 in :11.46 and was part of the first-place 4x100 relay.

"If I stay relaxed the entire race I can have a pretty good time," Toenis said. "I knew I had to get out to a really good start. Once I got to the 100, I thought I just had to go all out. I had a good start. If I don't have a good start, I don't usually catch up."

Other area winners included Harvey-Wells County's Payton Granger in the high jump (6 feet, 4 inches) and Griggs County Central's Wesley Odegaard in the shot put (52 feet, 10.5 inches).

"It was a good day. First place is always a good day," Odegaard said.
