Central's Johnson picked in USHL draft

Grand Forks Central forward Luke Johnson was selected by the Lincoln (Neb.) Stars in the first round of the United States Hockey League Futures Draft on Tuesday.

Grand Forks Central forward Luke Johnson was selected by the Lincoln (Neb.) Stars in the first round of the United States Hockey League Futures Draft on Tuesday.

Johnson has spent two years in Grand Forks since moving from Lincoln. As an eighth-grader, he tallied 26 points in 27 games, helping Grand Forks Red River to a state championship. Last year, he transferred to Grand Forks Central and had 46 points in 27 games, leading the Knights to a state title.

The Stars are coached by Johnson's uncle, Chad. Luke previously lived in Lincoln while his father, Steve, coached them for 11 years. Steve is now the head coach of the Fargo Force.
