Warroad came to East Grand Forks Senior High on Friday night with three of the top 10 scorers in Minnesota.

The Green Wave came in with the No. 3 ranking in the state on the strength of their defense.

Each team showed some of its strengths. But neither got a win, as fifth-ranked Warroad and Senior High played to a 2-2 tie in Minnesota Section 8A boys hockey. The game was a rematch of last season's 8A championship, won 2-0 by Senior High.

"Nobody likes a tie,'' Warroad coach Jay Hardwick said. "But it's better than a loss. We knew it would be a tight game. It always is when we play each other.

"It was our best against their best.''

Warroad's big three consists of Jared Bethune (13-16--29), Kyle Sylvester (11-18--29) and Kobe Roth (12-15--27). Syvester and Bethune each scored a goal for the Warriors. But the Wave defense held Warroad to only 16 shots on goal.

Senior High twice came from behind to tie.

Sylvester gave the Warriors a 1-0 on a slap shot from the right side 14:39 into the first, but Jace Pesch scored from in a crowd in front of the net 36 seconds later to pull the Wave even.

It stayed 1-1 until Bethune took control of the puck behind the Senior High net, skated out to the faceoff circle, spun to his right and scored with 8:42 left in the second.

"It looked like he was looking more to pass, but he decided to shoot and it went in,'' Hardwick said. "I thought we had momentum at that point.''

But Senior High pulled even again when Tanner Tweten drilled in a slap shot from the blue line 4:02 into the third.

"Tanner can shoot the puck,'' Senior High coach Tyler Palmiscno said. "And we had guys in front of the net. It looked like their goalie didn't see the puck.

"I felt we had the momentum. And we kept it into overtime. We had good puck control. But a lot of it was in the corners; we didn't get many good shots.''

Neither team had a lot of scoring opportunities. Warroad goalie Alex Burke finished with 17 saves. Josh Weber had 14 saves for the Green Wave.

"We both had some good opportunities,'' Hardwick said. "But we were both blocking shots and making it tough in the scoring areas. And we knew it would be tough. Senior High has limited a lot of teams to less than two goals.''
