Grand Forks Central weathered a back-and-forth battle with Devils Lake on Tuesday night to win its season opener 68-58 at the Knights’ gym.

Grand Forks Central and Devils Lake played before an audience of junior varsity teammates and parents due to COVID-19 regulations.

“For an opening game, we played OK” said Central coach Dan Carlson. “We struggled a little bit at the start of the second half. But had a nice push at the end of the game.”

Devils Lake was within four points for most of the first half thanks to multiple breakaways by guard Hayden Hofstad, who finished with 15 points.

The Knights led 34-24 at the half before Devils Lake roared back in the second half to keep pace.

But a key 3-pointer by senior guard Evan Wocken with 7:20 remaining gave the Knights enough breathing room to clinch the win. Central’s Mason Love and Mason Gravseth led the Knights with 18 and 16 points, respectively.

Grand Forks Central goes on the road Friday to face off against Valley City.

Tuesday night’s game was one of a handful of Grand Forks prep sports events taking place following a statewide pause in prep sports due to COVID-19.

In girls hockey, the Grand Forks KnightRiders scored the game’s first three goals en route to a 3-2 win over Jamestown.

In boys basketball, Fargo South downed Grand Forks Red River 80-66.
