Wherever there is UND football, tailgating is sure to follow.

Thursday night, the collegiate football season opened at the Alerus Center against Indiana-based Valparaiso University, and the 2013 tailgating season finally began.

Hundreds of green-clad fans populated the "Tailgate Village" in the Alerus Center parking lot hours before the game. Most came to eat and play games at the many business-sponsored tents, which served all manner of outdoor food.

Many, however, come to set up their own tailgate stations, complete with grills, lawn games, and portable shade. The super fans that put in the effort to appear at every home game said they do so out of a love for UND athletics and the pride of living in Grand Forks.
