Bear complaints aren't unique to northwestern Minnesota. The Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission in a recent news release offered these tips for dealing with bears:

- If encountering a bear at close range, remain standing straight up; back up slowly; speak in a calm, assertive voice; do not run or play dead; and leave the bear a clear escape route.

- Remove or secure anything that might attract animals, such as garbage cans, pet food, birdseed, outdoor grills and compost bins.

- If bear problems persist, contact a conservation officer or wildlife manager. Minnesota law allows shooting any bear that poses a risk to people or property, but the incident must be reported to a DNR conservation officer or wildlife manager within 48 hours.
