UND women's basketball coach Travis Brewster, head coach for the last eight years and a member of the staff for 17, will not return next season, athletic director Bill Chaves announced Wednesday.
Associate head coach Mallory Bernhard will serve as the program's interim head coach while a national search for the next head coach is conducted.
"We thank Travis for his years of service to the university, athletic department and our women's basketball program," Chaves said. "I felt this was the right time to make a leadership change in our women's basketball program.
"We are happy that Coach Bernhard is taking the reins of our women's basketball program until we name a permanent leader of the program."
Brewster had one season remaining on his contract. UND owes him $81,250, which is half of his base salary.
Brewster was a two-time Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year and led the program to its first and only NCAA Tournament appearance in 2014.
UND finished 15-15 overall this season and lost 72-43 to South Dakota State in the first round of the Summit League Tournament last weekend.
Brewster had an overall record of 128-120.
Brewster took over for 25-year veteran Gene Roebuck in 2012, meaning UND's next hire will be just the third head coach in the program since 1987.
