MAYVILLE, N.D. -- Thompson’s athletic success in reaching state tournaments continued Thursday.
The Tommies made yet another state tournament by downing Hillsboro-Central Valley 10-0 in the Class B Region 2 baseball championship game at Scott Berry Field.
Virtually every Thompson athletic team has qualified for state tournaments during the 2018-19 school year.
Now, the Thompson baseball team will set its sights on another state championship as the Tommies breezed through the Region 2 tournament. Thompson has finished runner-up to Park River/Fordville-Lankin at the past two state tournaments.
Thompson outscored its opponents 29-1 in regional play.
Thompson gained control early, scoring five runs in the first inning.
The Tommies were led by Marcus Hughes, who picked up the win and also went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI. Jacob Dick was 3-for-3, scoring three runs. Hayden Overby and Josh Sem also had two-hit games for the Tommies.
“Well, we came out and played a little different style today,” said Thompson coach Brady Schwab. “We played a little bit of small ball and we’ve been hitting big flies here as of late. So when we went small ball, we were able to execute it.
“I thought Marcus did a real nice job on the mound throwing strikes. We were able to get out to an early lead, and when you get out to an early lead there’s a lot more pressure on their team offensively, and Marcus was able to stop that pressure.”
