The Herald's Brad Schlossman has won first place in the Associated Press Sports Editors 2015 contest in beat writing for the 30,000-and-under circulation category.
Schlossman won for his portfolio of five stories demonstrating his coverage of college hockey, UND in particular.
He will receive his first place award at the 2016 APSE Conference, scheduled June 22-25, in Charlotte, N.C.
Balloting by seven APSE judges ranked Schlossman ahead of runner-up Ryan Holmgren of the Casper (Wyo.) Star; and third-place finisher Whitelaw Reid of the Daily Progress of Charlottesville, Va.
Sports editors in the Under 30,000 circulation category submitted a total of 52 beat writing entries written or directed by APSE member sports departments in 2015.

Schlossman's five entries included stories on college hockey's large-budget and small-budget schools butting heads; former UND coach Dave Hakstol's resignation to take the Philadelphia Flyers' coaching job and the hiring of Brad Berry to take over the program; video on UND's win over Miami to win the NCHC title outright; former UND player Lisa Marvin's recovery from an automobile accident; and former UND goalie Zane McIntyre's name change.
Schlossman also placed in the APSE Top 10 for explanatory writing and game story writing. He also joined with Wayne Nelson and Tom Miller to place in the Top 10 for breaking news coverage.
