Agassiz offers trapping, hunting

MIDDLE RIVER, Minn. -- Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge again this fall will offer furbearer trapping from Oct. 23 through Feb. 28. Raccoon and red fox seasons continue through March 15, and beaver and skunk will go through April 30.

Refuge personnel will offer a total of four trapping units to qualified trappers through a sealed bid system. Only one unit will be awarded to each trapper, and bids must be paid by Oct. 22. Minimum bids are $40 per unit.

Applicants must have appropriate state trapping and small game licenses and a minimum of two seasons of trapping experience. Successful bidders must trap predator mammals for at least two trapping nights from Oct. 23 to Nov. 4.

On the day before and during the firearms deer season, Nov. 5-14, trappers can drive only on roads open to hunters. Trapping isn't allowed in the two closed hunting areas from Nov. 5 through Nov. 14.

Prospective bidders can inspect and scout trapping units from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, from Monday through Oct. 11. Sealed bids must be hand-delivered or postmarked by 4 p.m. Oct. 12.

Besides trapping and deer hunting, Agassiz will be open for sharp-tailed grouse Nov. 6-30, archery deer Nov. 6-Dec. 31 and ruffed grouse Nov. 6-Jan. 2. Muzzleloader deer season is set for Nov. 27-Dec. 12.

Roosevelt park admission free

MEDORA, N.D. -- Saturday is National Public Lands Day, and the National Park Service offers free admission at Theodore Roosevelt National Park and other parks.

Interpretive programs will be offered in the park's North and South units. The park also offers scenic driving, wildlife watching, hiking and camping. Regular camping fees will be charged.

Volunteers who want to help with trail work should meet at the North Unit Visitor Center at 9 a.m. and bring water and work gloves. Those volunteering for National Public Lands Day will get a free one-day pass for future use at any National Park site.
