UND finishes
with highest GPA

UND announced this week that its 436 student-athletes combined for a 3.185 grade point average during the Fall 2013 semester, the highest fall term GPA in UND Athletics history.

North Dakota’s women’s teams boasted a 3.302 fall GPA while its men’s teams combined for a 3.056 GPA.

“Once again our student-athletes got it done in the classroom in a big way,” said UND athletic director Brian Faison. “We are proud of our academic successes and the great job our coaches and academic services staff do in supporting our student-athletes in their educational pursuits.”

Fifteen of UND’s 19 teams achieved at least a 3.0 GPA during the fall 2013 semester. UND volleyball led the way with a 3.536 team GPA, followed by women’s cross country (3.463), women’s track and field (3.454), men’s cross country (3.417) and women’s swimming and diving (3.409).

During the 2013 fall semester alone, 275 student-athletes achieved at least a 3.0 GPA, accounting for 63 percent of UND’s total student-athlete population. Sixty of those student-athletes recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA during the fall, 29 of whom boast a cumulative 4.0 GPA.

During tonight’s women’s basketball game against Weber State, UND Athletics will honor its Fall 2013 Athletics Director’s Honor Roll, which is comprised of 312 student-athletes who achieved either a Fall 2013 semester or cumulative 3.0 grade point average. The presentation will take place at halftime.

Fetsch named
executive secretary

VALLEY CITY, N.D. - The North Dakota High School Activities Association board of directors named Matt Fetsch as the organization’s new executive secretary on Wednesday.

Since 2010, Fetsch has been the NDHSAA’s assistant to the executive secretary.  He will take over for Sherm Sylling, who will retire in June.

Fetsch will become the sixth executive secretary in association history.

“We are excited to have Matt as our new executive secretary,” said Todd Olson, the Fargo public school activities director and the president of the board of directors. “The relationships he has built around the state and his vision for the association will serve us well into the future.”

•   Women’s swimming: UND’s Morgan Lynch is the Western Athletic Conference swimmer of the week. The senior from Elk River, Minn., won the 500 freestyle in helping UND beat South Dakota State last week.
