Fertile-Beltrami sweeps golf titles: It was a great day for the Fertile-Beltrami boys golf team Wednesday at the Minnesota state Class A meet in Becker.
The Falcons claimed their first state title by finishing with a two-day score of 629 at the Pebble Creek Golf Course.
Individually, Fertile-Beltrami’s Rylin Petry, a junior, claimed the title by finishing one stroke ahead of Brett Reid of Community Christian.
Petry, who shot a 70 on Tuesday, ended with a 76 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 146.
The Falcons and Sleepy Eye United were tied for the top spot after the first day. Both ended with a 321 total.
But the Falcons shaved 13 strokes off their first day score and managed to hold off Legacy Christian Academy, which finished second at 642.
Depth paid off for Fertile-Beltrami on the second day of the meet. Ethan Finseth finished 13th individually for the Falcons while Masen Nowacki was tied for 15th.
Kittson County Central’s Tyler Hennen finished fourth individually.
Ole Olson dies: Longtime North Dakota broadcaster Ole Olson, a fixture on Jamestown radio for decades, died Monday at the age of 77.
Norman Kidd, known as Ole Olson on the radio, was born in 1944 in Dixon, Ill., and moved to Jamestown in 1964.
For years, he worked for KSJB AM 600 in Jamestown, calling numerous Class B basketball games and other sporting events. He was on the air in the mornings as well on KSJB, which has a booming signal.
He is survived by his wife, Janice, a son, Barry, a daughter, Becky, and five grandchildren.
BGMR falls at state: Badger-Greenbush-Middle River fell to Edgerton 4-2 on Wednesday in the third-place game of the Minnesota state Class A softball tournament in Mankato.
The Gators finished the season 27-2.
Erika Howell and Jacy Wojchowski each drove in a run for B-G-MR.
Edgerton, which finished 21-4, broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the fifth inning.
