Minn. Section 8A team tournament

Monday, in East Grand Forks and Grand Forks

Crookston (No. 6) 4, Benson/KMS 3

Minnewaska (No. 2) 6, Perham (No. 7) 1

Fergus Falls (No. 4) 6, EGF Senior High 1

Singles

1. Noah Tarczon, FF, over Seth Aaker 4-6, 6-0, 10-4; 2. Ben Schierer, FF, over Cole Gerber 6-1, 4-6, 6-1; 3. Matt Niblock, FF, over Jude Johnson-Bohn 6-3, 6-0; 4. Carter Ness, FF, over Carson Knutson 6-4, 6-1

Doubles

1. Colton Partain/Maveric Kalenburg, FF, over Tanner Lubinski/Tate Fridgen 6-2, 3-6, 10-7; 2. Adam Johnson/Tommy Loer, EGF, over Charles Vaughn/Josh Kasper 6-1, 6-4; 3. Conner Ackerson/Grant Ackerson, FF, over Garret Beauchamp/Thomas McMahon 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5)

EGF Senior High head coach Kyle Hanson: “Fergus Falls really brought their game today. This was our third meeting and this was the best they played. We were a bit up and down in our matches and that was due to Fergus. Throughout the lineup we kind of had one great set and then a set that was a struggle.

That being said, we still had three matches go the distance of three sets. Unfortunately, we couldn’t hang on in any of them and that is a bit frustrating. In some matches we ran out of steam and others we got timid and didn’t want to make a mistake.

The team is bummed and rightfully so. After not having a season last year these boys were cramming a lot of tennis learning into a short couple months. We also have 6 seniors that played their final team match and that is always tough. They still get another shot at individuals.

A big thank you goes out to senior veteran players Adam Johnson, Cole Gerber, Jude Johnson-Bohn and Tanner Lubinski along with newcomers Garret Beauchamp and Tate Fridgen. These guys quickly reset a standard of how to play for our younger guys. They’ll be tough to replace and I wish them all the best.”

Coach Jay Frydenlund said: “Very windy day. Roseau shot a very good score in the conditions. Subsection is next Tuesday, and we have got to eliminate the bad holes. They are killing us -- round ruiners ... doubles, triples and worse. Tournament time, and we should be ready to grind and compete to advance to sections.”

UMC’s Reller honored

University of Minnesota Crookston baseball player Brock Reller was named to the 2021 D2CCA Central Region Second Team on Wednesday. Reller is the third player in school history to earn the accolade joining Reed Hjelle who was named to the D2CCA Central Region First Team in 2018 and 2019, and Kenny Perez who was named to the Central Region Second Team in 2016.

Reller was an All-NSIC First Team selection for the Golden Eagles. He hit .338 as a senior with a .448 on-base percentage and a .803 slugging percentage. Reller was the NSIC’s leader in home runs. He had 17 on the season. Reller added 39 runs scored, seven doubles, and four triples.

He is UMC’s all-time career home run leader and single-season home run leader. Reller helped Minnesota Crookston to their best season ever, as they picked up their first-ever NCAA Division II ranking reaching as high as No. 18 in the NCBWA poll. The Golden Eagles advanced to the NSIC Tournament for the fifth time, and picked up three wins, falling just one win from the NSIC Championship Game.
