UND 1, Western Michigan 0 -- Judd Caulfield (Andrew Peski, Shane Pinto) 1:33. After it took 63:40 to get the game's first goal a day earlier, this time it's only 93 seconds. Pinto wins an offensive zone draw back to Peski, whose point shot is blocked out of the zone. Peski picks it back up in the neutral zone and dishes it to Caulfield, who leans into it just inside the blue line and hammers one by Western Michigan goalie Brandon Bussi for his first collegiate goal.
UND 2, Western Michigan 0 -- Jasper Weatherby (Zach Yon) 7:37. Weatherby pokes the puck away Western Michigan defenseman Kale Bennett at the blue line in UND's defensive zone. Yon picks it up and starts a rush the other way. Yon leaves a drop pass for Weatherby, who launches a wrist shot from the right circle. Bussi makes the initial save, but the rebound pops high into the air. Weatherby follows it up and bats it out of midair for his sixth goal of the season.
UND 3, Western Michigan 0 -- Judd Caulfield (Jordan Kawaguchi, Matt Kiersted) 9:58 (pp). Skating on a major power play with Cole Gallant in the penalty box for charging, Caulfield gets his second of the period on a nice bounce. Kiersted set up Kawaguchi for a one-timer in the right circle. Kawaguchi's blast hits Caulfield in the skate and goes past Bussi, who is pulled in favor of Ben Blacker after the goal.
Notes: The teams went to intermission break with 3:15 left in the first period after a collision between UND's Gavin Hain and Western Michigan's Hugh McGing shattered a piece of glass inside the penalty box. Western Michigan's Cole Gallant was called for a charging major at 8:59 of the first period.
UND 4, Western Michigan 0 -- Shane Pinto (Judd Caulfield) 18:23. After a draw in the defensive zone, Caulfield wins a battle and gets it around Western Michigan defenseman Cam Lee. Caulfield gives it off to Pinto, who starts a two-on-one rush the other way. Pinto takes the shot himself from the right circle and buries No. 7 of the season.
UND 4, Western Michigan 1 -- Cole Gallant (Luke Bafia, Brett Van Os) :55. Adam Scheel's shutout streak ends after 118:08 and after making 70 consecutive saves going back to the Minnesota series when Gallant scores on a backhand in front.
UND 5, Western Michigan 1 -- Shane Pinto (Westin Michaud, Andrew Peski) 1:14. UND answers right back in just 19 seconds. Michaud pulls a puck off the end wall and feeds Pinto between the dots. The UND rookie snipes one for his second of the night. That's four goals by UND freshmen on the evening.
UND 5, Western Michigan 2 -- Austin Rueschhoff (Hugh McGing, Cam Lee) 10:14 (pp). Western only takes seven seconds to score on its third power-play chance of the night. The 6-foot-7 Rueschhoff, camped out on top of the crease, bangs home a rebound.
UND 6, Western Michigan 2 -- Matt Kiersted (Jordan Kawaguchi, Westin Michaud) 16:11 (pp). UND tacks on a sixth goal while skating on its second major power play of the night. With Mattias Samuelsson out of the game for a hit from behind, Kawaguchi enters the zone on the right side and pulls up, waiting for the play to set up. He hits Kiersted, the trailer, and Kiersted walks it and snipes No. 2 of the season.
UND 7, Western Michigan 2 -- Dixon Bowen (Zach Yon) 18:20 (pp). UND tacks on another goal in the major power play when Bowen buries it during a scramble at the side of the net. It's Yon's second point of the night.
UND 8, Western Michigan 2 -- Westin Michaud 19:09. Michaud steals the puck from Western Michigan goalie Ben Blacker behind the net, skates it out front and scores.
Both teams are using the exact same lineups as the series opener. UND is wearing its black jerseys. It enters the weekend 3-0 in black jerseys this season. The Fighting Hawks beat Canisius 5-0 at home to open the season in them. They also beat Denver 4-1 and Minnesota 3-2 on the road wearing them. UND enters the game on a nation-leading 12-game unbeaten streak (11-0-1) and is looking for its first sweep in Lawson since the 2015-16 NCAA national championship team did it.
