FARGO-For the second straight year, a lower-seeded Bismarck Legacy knocked off a higher-seeded Fargo Davies in the opening round of the North Dakota Class A state girls basketball tournament.

Last year's overtime win may have come as a surprise to some, but Thursday, March 8's, 68-38 win was a margin of victory no one was expecting at the Fargodome.

"I would say this is a bigger surprise," said Legacy junior Taryn Allmaras, who did not play last year when Legacy marched on to the school's first state championship. "This is a new group of girls this year and we still want to win it."

According to Allmaras and her coach Jim Petrik, rebounding was the difference. Legacy outrebounded Davies 34-21-with a 15-5 advantage on the offensive boards. But was Petrik expecting a 30-point win?

"I was expecting to play with them and have a chance to win but I was not expecting that," said Petrik, whose team will take a 14-11 record into Friday's semifinals. "I wouldn't say it was a surprise but as a coach there is great satisfaction whenever your players execute the game plan to perfection."

The game plan was to limit a Davies offense that averages 73 points to one shot. Davies, whose previous low-scoring output this season was 51 points, made only 28 percent of its shots.

"You are not going to win many games shooting like that," said Davies head coach Tim Jacobson, whose team's 12-game winning streak came to an end, suffering only its fourth setback of the season. "Give them all the credit. They played a real good game. We never were able to get into sync at all."

Davies showed hope cutting the lead to 28-21 early in the second half. But that's when Allmaras buried two 3-pointers and two free throws to make it 36-25. Davies never recovered.
