Defending state singles champion Shaelyn Johnson of Grand Forks Red River is back.

After dropping three straight matches -- one to Monti Knewtson of West Fargo Sheyenne in last weekend's East Region singles final, one to Minot's Raquel Egge and another Mandan's Elizabeth Felderman during Thursday's team tournament -- Johnson responded by routing her first two opponents at the North Dakota girls state singles tournament Friday.

Johnson beat Bismarck Legacy's Sierra Knoll 6-1, 6-1 in the first round and topped Jamestown's Courtney Peterson 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

That sets up a rematch between Johnson and Egge, the top seed out of the West Region, in today's semifinals at 10 a.m. in Choice Health and Fitness.

The other singles semifinal is between West Fargo Sheyenne's Monti Knewtson, the top seed out of the East Region and the 2017 state singles champion, and Dickinson's Anna Stankova, the West's No. 2 seed.

The semifinal winners will play for the state singles championship at 1:30 p.m.

Seven of the top eight seeds reached the semifinals in the singles and doubles competition.

The other semifinalist is a massive surprise.

Kati Lee and Laura Kendlinger of Fargo Davies, who took seventh place in the East Region tournament last weekend, pulled off back-to-back upsets to reach the doubles semifinals. Lee and Kindlinger beat Sofia Egge and Morgan Wheeler, the West's No. 2 seed, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round, then knocked off Bismarck Century's Blaike Zander and Jessica Keller 6-1, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

Lee and Kendlinger will play the favorites, Preeti Chemiti and Mimi Gu of West Fargo Sheyenne in one semifinal. Gu won a doubles title a year ago with Knewtson.

Central team reaches semis

The other doubles semifinal will feature Grand Forks Central's Katie Stauss and Gabby Spicer against Mandan's Felderman and McKenna Vogel.

Stauss, a senior, and Spicer, a sophomore, easily won their first round match over 6-1, 6-1, then survived a three-set challenge against Minot's Eden Olson and Joelle Fettig in the quarterfinals.

Stauss and Spicer, who finished second in the East Region doubles tournament a week ago, beat Olson and Fetting 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 to get to the semifinals.

The doubles state championship match is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Choice Health and Fitness.
