There was still one set left in the North Dakota girls state tennis team championship when West Fargo Sheyenne players began celebrating on the court with their teammates.

They had reason to be happy.

This season, the Mustangs left no doubt.

A year after getting knocked off by Minot in the state final, Sheyenne stormed through the girls tennis season, posting a perfect 22-0 record and capping it with a perfect state tournament.

The Mustangs swept all three duals Thursday at Choice Health and Fitness, beating Dickinson 5-0 in the quarterfinals, topping Fargo North 5-0 in the semifinals and finishing it off with a 5-0 win over Fargo Davies in the championship.

"We worked hard, but it's the state championship," Sheyenne junior Monti Knewtson said. "Anything can happen."

Not this year.

Sheyenne overwhelmed opponents with its top three singles players.

Nobody came close to beating Knewtson at No. 1 singles, Preeti Chemiti at No. 2 or Mimi Gu at No. 3 at state. They won their matches Thursday by a combined game score of 108-14. That's all they needed to win each dual.

But for good measure, Sheyenne's doubles teams also went undefeated on the day. Abby College and Miranda Sommerfeld won three straight-set matches at No. 1 doubles Thursday, while Kaitlin Sundlie and Hailey Raan won three-setters in both the semifinals and championship.

"We all came into this with so much motivation and so much drive to want to win this," Knewtson said. "I think every single match everybody played as hard as they could and gave it their all out there, because we have a bunch of seniors. It's their last team tournament. We wanted to do it for them and ourselves, too."

It marked Sheyenne's second state championship in three years.

Unlike the 2017 championship, this one was over quickly.

Knewtson won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles; Chemiti won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2; and Gu won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 to quickly decide the championship in less than an hour.

Sheyenne's doubles teams provided the final 5-0 margin. A week earlier in the East Region final, the Mustangs only beat Davies 3-2.

"If somebody would have come up to me and said that at the state tournament, you will win 5-0 on all three matches, I would have told them, 'You're crazy,'" Sheyenne coach Chad Anderson said. "I knew my Fab Three would do great. I just didn't know about my other people who were playing doubles. I didn't know where they would be and how well they would play. They just went over expectations."
