Nine workforce development grants, totaling nearly $1.3 million, has been awarded to businesses and educational institutions in Minnesota to train workers in an effort to keep high-quality jobs in the state.
The grants, awarded by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development and given through the Minnesota Job Skills Partnership, were given in March prior to the pandemic, according to the department on Tuesday, April 28.
“The MJSP is a vital tool in helping Minnesotans train for high-skill, high-paying jobs, particularly as Minnesota’s economy will begin to recover from the impacts of COVID-19 over the coming months,” DEED Commissioner Steve Grove said in a statement. “Training workers to meet the needs of Minnesota has never been more important.”
The following businesses and institutions were awarded the grants:
Alexandria Technical & Community College, Aagard Group - $49,915
Alexandria Technical & Community College is partnering with Aagard to train 104 employees. The training will focus on building critical leadership skills and enhance the skill sets at all levels of the organization to meet their customers’ growing needs.
Anoka-Ramsey Community College, Kurt Manufacturing/Kurt Machining – $49,160
Kurt Manufacturing expects the training to improve its machine operations, material costs containment and front office operations. The 45 employees receiving the training are expected to perform their jobs in a more efficient manner and advance into higher level positions.
Anoka-Ramsey Community College, Metro Mold & Design - $300,000
Anoka Ramsey Community College will deliver leadership, technical skills, quality improvement, and organizational development training to all 232 Metro Mold & Design employees. The training will address an immediate need to change the way MMD does business and improve its global competitiveness.
HIRED, Cerenity Senior Care – Humboldt - $176,099
Cerenity is partnering with HIRED and Dakota County Technical College to prepare 40 low-income individuals for Certified Nursing Assistant positions. Graduates from the program will also be eligible for one of the employer’s licensed practical nurse and registered nurse programs.
MN State University, Mankato, Jones Metal - $172,026
MSU and Jones Metal are partnering to deliver training to all 95 Jones Metal employees. This training will increase their knowledge and skills and Jones Metal will increase their capacity to meet customer demand and grow the business.
MN State Community & Technical College, KLN Family Brands - $24,941
KLN will partner with Minnesota State Community and Technical College to provide 20 employees with customized StrengthsFinder-based training. The training will enhance their leadership skills and increase engagement and retention.
MN State College Southeast, Mayo Clinic Health System - Red Wing - $158,763
This training will be developed to address concerns of employee stress, burnout and well-being within MCHS. Three Hundred MCHS employees will go through the curriculum and the impact of the training will be measured with pre/post program assessment data.
MN State University, Mankato, Mayo Clinic Health System - Southwest Region - $384,863
MSU and the Mayo Clinic Health System will use this training to address the shortage of surgical nurses in the state. The training will involve 250 employees using the Nurse Experiential Surgical Training (NEST) program.
South Central College, Nelson Numeric – $49,949
Nelson Numeric is partnering with South Central College to develop and deliver training for 47 Machinists and Quality inspectors focusing on three areas: Foundations of Machining, Introduction to Machining Levels C-A and Standards for Quality Improvement.
MJSP has awarded $69.1 million to train more than 80,725 workers since 2011, and has leveraged $142 million in private funding. The next application deadline is May 4 and grants will be awarded in June.
