Cass County State's Attorney Birch Burdick said his letter seeking an attorney general's opinion "was not written at the urging of any voting rights groups. I simply found the law was not as clear as it could be regarding proof of citizenship.
Cass County State's Attorney Birch Burdick has requested that North Dakota Attorney General Drew Wrigley take over prosecutorial decisions in the case of the fatal shooting of Shane Netterville. Burdick said he can't recall an officer-involved shooting case that he didn't review in Cass County.
A prosecutor is dating a detective, and though Cass County State's Attorney Birch Burdick says his office has taken precautions to properly handle that situation, it's not clear that's actually the case.
Fargo-area politicians and activists will no doubt have a lot of success milking this issue for notoriety, and donations, but even if they're successful in implementing a policy, and even if that local policy withstands legal scrutiny under state law, it isn't likely to change much of anything.
