BEMIDJI -- We encourage Bemidji-area residents and business owners to attend tonight's public meeting about the future of postal service in the region. It will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Bemidji City Hall.

Representatives of the U.S. Postal Service will discuss results of a recent Area Mail Processing study of the Bemidji Post Office and listen to questions and feedback from attendees.

According to the study, the USPS could save about $750,000 a year by moving mail processing from Bemidji to a regional center in St. Cloud. The Postal Service indicated that while the study supports such a move from a business standpoint, the public's input will be taken into consideration before a final decision is made.

The skeptics among us would say that the public meeting is only a formality, that the decision to consolidate has already been made. Recent government shutdowns and rhetoric have made skeptics of a lot of us.

But Bemidjians can't let that kind of thinking get in the way of what needs to be done this week. A packed house of Bemidji Post Office supporters can send a loud message to the decision makers.

We recognize that the Postal Service's business plan has been blown up over the years with the use of email and automated payments. Some of us have not set foot in the local post office for quite some time. But we expect timely service from the USPS, and moving operations to St. Cloud undoubtedly would impact that service in some ways.

Bemidji is a growing regional center, and it only makes sense to retain its status as a postal center as well.

Let your voices be heard, Bemidjians.
