PRAIRIE VOICES: About Roger Johnson

Roger Johnson has been president of the National Farmers Union since mid-March. The NFU is the nation's second-largest general farm organization, with more than a quarter-million members and chapters in 32 states.

Roger Johnson has been president of the National Farmers Union since mid-March. The NFU is the nation's second-largest general farm organization, with more than a quarter-million members and chapters in 32 states.

A native of Turtle Lake, N.D., and a member of the North Dakota Democratic-NPL Party, Johnson was elected North Dakota agriculture commissioner in 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2006. He also was elected president of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture and led the group's policy on the 2008 farm bill.

Johnson holds a degree in agricultural economics from North Dakota State University. He farmed full time from 1977 to 1989, when he became administrator of the state ag department's Agricultural Mediation Service.

Johnson and his wife, Anita, have a daughter and two sons. He recently spoke with Agweek staff writer Mikkel Pates.
