Every day, we are called upon to help others through one of the most frightening times of their lives. Every day, we are called upon to provide a sense of security and relief during chaotic and challenging situations. Every day, we are called upon to do the work that only a select few can do. Every day, we are called to care.

In 2015, Altru Ambulance Services saw an increase of 12 percent in calls for service, for a total of 8,326. We have a staff of more than 60 emergency medical services staff who work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year to make sure residents in our community and beyond can rest assured and rely on EMS to help them in their hour of greatest need.

As we celebrate National EMS Week, May 15-21, we also want to thank the surrounding EMS services who work with us daily in providing lifesaving care to the residents of Grand Forks County and beyond.

The theme of National EMS Week this year is "Called to Care." EMS is more than a job. Practitioners have a true calling to help and care for others and represent hope to people who are in their most critical time of need.

Altru Ambulance Services includes many caring individuals who give up their holidays at home with family, work many sleepless nights and give themselves fully to make sure their patients and family members are well taken-care-of in what can be very scary and frightening situations. I urge Herald readers to take some time this week to recognize EMS professionals in their communities who volunteer, teach CPR and take care of people's loved ones when emergencies arise.
