Updated 12:14 p.m. May 2, 2014: You know winter’s over because city workers are assigned this weekend to taking down Christmas lights in the city center.
You know it’s May because it begins with the sound of music. And the Thursday Music Club of Greater Grand Forks is leading the way in celebration of National Music Week, which begins on Sunday.
Members of Thursday Music Club are encouraged to attend concerts and school programs, to dance, to sing and spread the word about Music Week.
They gather up the programs and bring them to the committee made up of Dee Larson, Marian Hanson, Edith Soli and AliceJean Rand.

They are serious about promoting music. Members visit eldercare facilities on a weekly basis to sing with the residents.
Their objectives include a goal of developing and maintaining highest standards of musical creativity and performance. This includes providing scholarships to the summer music camp at the International Peace Garden.
Their largest fundraiser is the Christmas Musicale the first Sunday in December.
New president of Thursday Music Club is Agnes Hamerlik. She succeeds Margy Gabrielsen and Darlene Holien, who were co-presidents.
Sound of music
There is, indeed, music in the air. There’s a recital for piano with Nariaki Sugiura of UND and Emilio Colon, Indiana University, set for 6 p.m. Saturday in the North Dakota Museum of Art on the UND campus. … And there’s a graduate violin recital by Joel Tosta Alarcon set for 4 p.m. Sunday also at the Museum of Art.
The second annual Opera Gala will be held tonight in the Masonic Temple Auditorium downtown. UND voice students will be joined by the UND Symphony Orchestra.

And former Judy Rae dancers will hold a reunion recital at UND's Chester Fritz Auditorium at 7 Friday evening... Meanwhile, this is the final weekend for performances of “Last of the Boys” at Fire Hall Theatre downtown.

Q. How much money was raised here this week for the cause of Ethiopia Reads schools?
A. Ann Porter, the coordinator, happily reports $719 came in at the Pizza Ranch Fundraiser. Another $399 was donated at a women’s luncheon at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Jill Shafer and Anne Walker spoke there about their trip to Ethiopia to train teachers and librarians. Another workday will be held Wednesday at Schroeder School where more than $22,000 has been raised since 2007 for Ethiopia Reads. Ben Franklin students will hold their annual “Bring a Book, Buy a Book” at the end of May. They have raised more than $5,000 in eight years of holding the event. And all the while Porter, a retired Lewis and Clark principal, is saying, “Those who read … bloom!”
Q. Do you have any principles?
A. Yes. I stand four-square behind the teaching of Latin in public schools. I seek more respect for the English Coulee. I believe there should be an underpass on 42nd Street so people don’t have to be stalled by long trains. And I think the crows should be confined to the banks of the Red River. Also, there should be a Mr. Goodbar in every candy counter.
