Those are choice items to be sampled during the social hour before a Midwinter Icelandic Feast Saturday evening at the Mountain (N.D.) Community Center.
The event celebrates the Icelandic heritage and survival of a long winter for people of Icelandic descent around Mountain, Gardar, Akra, Svold, Hallson and Cavalier, all in North Dakota. It’s a first time event. It’s called a Porrablot. And there are all kinds of Icelandic food on the menu - beyond and above the appetizers.

All of the 175 tickets available have been sold.
Here in Grand Forks there’s the zing and the pop and the sounds of fans cheering on their teams in the state high school hockey tournament.
The weekend is rife with activity. UND fans are having lunch on the mezzanine of the Alerus Center today... And the Men’s Show is scheduled all weekend.... There’s a UND women’s basketball game Saturdayafternoon... While Jay Owenhouse, the magician, is scheduled Saturday afternoon at the Chester Fritz....
The UND men’s hockey team is in Duluth this weekend... With a social for UND fans set for Grandma’s Sports Garden and Events Center before the Saturday game....
Snowball softball
Some events are extra special, over and above and beyond:
- A Snowball Winter Softball Tournament is set for Saturday morning at Apollo Field. It’s sponsored by the Nonprofit Leadership Student Association. Proceeds go to St. Joseph Social Care.
- There will be an open house between 3 and 4:30 p.m. Monday in Room 125 of Montgomery Hall. It will honor Tom Rand, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at UND, who is turning 75 on Sunday. Also recognized as Mr. Bridge expert around here, Rand is requesting no gifts. Just friends, heartfelt wishes and funny stories.
He is a good natured man who on most days rides his bike from his home in East Grand Forks to the campus.

- Fargo fan luncheons are held the second Tuesday of each month between September and April for those who bleed UND green in the Fargo-Moorhead area. They are held at noon in Ramada Plaza and Suites. Before his recent death, G. James “Jim” McKay was praised for his years of loyalty with a UND Fan Salute.
