Letter: Post-election rally snubs the Constitution

Letter to the editor FSA

On Nov. 7, the same day the media announced that Vice President Joe Biden is the president-elect, Bismarck decided to hold a rally for President Trump. This rally was attended by many elected officials to include North Dakota’s Congressional delegation. Think about the message being sent by this rally and the attendees – they are telling North Dakota and the rest of the world that it is more important to bear allegiance to a man instead of the Constitution.

Let that sink in – there were hundreds of people who decided that a man is more important than the Constitution of the United States. As a veteran, the thought of this scares the hell out of me. The rally attendees claim to be “true Patriots,” but a real patriot supports their country and the ideals it was founded on.

Not to be forgotten, but North Dakota currently has the worst outbreak of COVID, per capita, in the world. We are setting new records daily concerning newly infected, positivity rates and deaths of our fellow North Dakotans. How can anyone think that a gathering, even if outdoors, is a good thing if people refuse to wear masks?

A true leader will govern for all, regardless of party affiliation, and will not give allegiance to a person over country. A true leader is one that wins humbly and accepts defeat graciously. Sadly in Bismarck, we didn’t see any of those traits.
