Letter: Ideas of honesty, fairness cast aside

Letter to the editor FSA

Lies, slander, innuendo, fake documents and outright character assasination. It’s been nearly 70 years since the era of Joe McCarthy.

What we are witnessing today makes McCarthysim pale in comparison. What was then a powerful demagog individual has been replaced by an elitist mob unwilling to cede power. Never in this nation’s history has there been such a self-centered group.

I’m 74 and only once have I voted for a Republican for president and it wasn’t Trump.

It’s incredible what I am seeing and hearing. That the party I so often supported has degenerated to this level. The lies, deceit and innuendo are appalling. The hate and viciousness are shocking. Where is the moral compass? There is no intellectual depth. It’s as if many of the electorate are going mad, led by goons and loons.

It’s depressing. How is it that the ideals of honesty and fairness are cast aside?

Lincoln said you can fool all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time, but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time. As of the present, I’m not so sure.

On Wednesday, May 29, Robert Mueller quite probably did the greatest harm ever done to the American idea of the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. His unwillingness to testify before either the House or the Senate Judiciary Committee is cowardly and unconscionable. Man up.

I’m an atheist, but if ever the eighth commandment was applicable, this is it.
