Letter: Consider renewable energy in a responsible way

By relying on renewables and limiting nuclear, coal and gas fired power generation, California has backed itself into a corner.

Fire, ready, aim. This is the process being promoted by environmentalists and left-wing politicians when it relates to energy

In California, the Legislature passed a law outlawing the sale of new combustion engines in 2035. The day after this, the state asked its residents to limit their electrical use and not plug in their cars. Seriously? According to the California Energy Commission, at the end of 2021 there were 29,109,620 registered vehicles in California, of which 837,887 are electric. Less than 3% of California’s vehicles are electric! Does anyone see a problem?

By relying on renewables and limiting nuclear, coal and gas fired power generation, California has backed itself into a corner.

What is even more immoral with the 2035 requirement is the fact that our nation relies on China for over 70% of the materials needed for batteries and solar panels. In order to facilitate this, China is building a record number of coal plants to support their manufacturing needs. Additionally, look at what has happened in Europe after years of gutting coal, gas and nuclear power generation. Russia is holding Europe hostage with its gas pipeline. Prices are skyrocketing. However, our government depends on China for required materials for batteries and solar panels and OPEC+ (which includes Russia) for oil, while the left is desperately trying to destroy our domestic oil/gas industry.

Earlier this year President Biden asked OPEC+ and Venezuela to increase their oil production but did not approach U.S. producers. What a slap in the face to the 250,000 plus US energy workers. No one in the world produces crude cleaner than the US.

Climate change is real and we need to include renewables as part of the mix. Let's do it in a responsible way and not at the expense of reliable, domestic energy and reliable transportation.
